WhatsApp Enhances Privacy with New Feature to Protect IP Addresses During Calls
WhatsApp for iOS and Android has been updated to include the ability to conceal your IP address. This function will conceal both your real-world location and your IP address from the other person on the call via WhatsApp servers. Additionally, WhatsApp is introducing a new privacy tool that lets users block unknown callers. By using this functionality, users' data will be protected against even more complex cyberattacks.
WhatsApp has adopted a new strategy to allay privacy concerns. This strategy involves routing all calls through its servers, which effectively hides users' whereabouts and masks their IP addresses.
All calls continue to be end-to-end encrypted during this relaying process, guaranteeing that nobody can listen in on the discussions—not even WhatsApp.
WhatsApp admits that there may be a little drop in call quality while utilizing the call relay privacy setting.
To activate the Protect IP address in calls feature, follow these steps within the WhatsApp app:
- Press Options,
- then choose Privacy,
- then Advanced.
- In-calls, choose Protect IP address.
It's crucial to remember that group calls on WhatsApp automatically go through the company's servers by default, so you won't need to enable this setting especially for group conversations. However, call quality will be compromised during the process of having your call routed through WhatsApp's servers.
