Android 15: New 'Notification Cooldown' Quiets Alerts

Fresh from the tech sphere, the curtain has been lifted on the Android 15 Developer Preview 1, unveiled just days ago. Renowned Android expert Mishaal Rahman took to Twitter, shedding light on a notable feature nestled within this inaugural glimpse of Android 15: the "notification cooldown." This innovative addition gradually lowers the notification volume when successive notifications flood in from the same app or conversation. As it stands, unless modifications intervene before Android 15's official launch later this year, the "Notification cooldown" feature will be automatically enabled.

Users will wield the power to tailor their notification experience, opting to apply the cooldown universally or confining it solely to conversations. This means that if you find yourself bombarded by incessant notifications from a particularly loquacious messaging group, this feature stands poised to temper the barrage, rendering the constant buzz less grating. Whether it's an unruly group chat or a relentless stream of app alerts, this functionality ensures that with each subsequent notification from the same source, the volume gradually diminishes from its initial level.

However, silence is never the outcome, regardless of how frequently the same notification recurs. The underlying concept is for users to discern the dwindling notification volume, prompting them to gauge whether an incoming notification hails from a familiar source. Armed with this information, users might opt to bypass a low-volume notification until it reverberates at its standard level, signaling a fresh missive from a new sender.

Following an undisclosed interval, the Notification cooldown will reset, reverting all notifications—regardless of their prior frequency—to their standard volume.

Google's roadmap for Android 15 includes another Developer Preview slated for the forthcoming month, heralding the commencement of the Android 15 beta program in April. From April through July, a monthly beta release cadence is scheduled, culminating in platform stability come June. The grand unveiling of Android 15's final iteration is anticipated to unfurl in September or October, echoing last year's debut of Android 14 on October 4th.
