Xiaomi is bringing some interesting features to the affordable smartphone market with the new Redmi 17.
The phone comes with a massive 7,500mAh battery, 45W fast charging, a large 6.9-inch 120Hz display, and something you don't normally expect from a budget phone: RGB lighting on the back.
The Redmi 17 has already started appearing in select global markets, with the 4G version scheduled to arrive in Nigeria on September 1, 2026.
I recently got the Redmi 17 for an initial look, so let's go through what comes in the box, the design, specifications and some of the features that immediately stood out.
What's Inside the Redmi 17 Box?
The packaging contains the usual accessories you'd expect from a Redmi smartphone.
Inside the box is the Redmi 17 itself, along with a SIM ejector tool, documentation, a protective case, a USB-C cable and a charging adapter.
The particular model being unboxed here is the 4GB RAM and 128GB storage version.
It's also worth pointing out that the charger supports the phone's 45W Turbo Charging, so you don't have to purchase a separate charger just to take advantage of its maximum wired charging speed.
A Large 6.9-Inch Smartphone
The first thing you'll probably notice about the Redmi 17 is its size.
Xiaomi has equipped it with a 6.9-inch display, making this a phone designed for people who enjoy having plenty of screen space.
Whether you're watching YouTube videos, scrolling through TikTok, browsing social media or playing games, the large panel should provide an immersive viewing experience.
The design itself is relatively simple. Rather than going for an overly complicated appearance, Xiaomi has kept the phone clean and straightforward.
Depending on the market, the Redmi 17 is available in colours including Black, Deep Blue, Lotus Purple and Oak Green.
The model I have here has a particularly nice finish, with the camera module positioned towards the upper section of the rear panel and Redmi branding lower down.
RGB Lighting Is One of the Biggest Design Surprises
One feature that immediately stands out is something you wouldn't normally expect on a phone in this category: RGB lighting.
The Redmi 17 has lighting effects on the rear that can display different colours.
The lighting isn't just there for decoration either. Xiaomi has incorporated it into certain functions, including notifications, charging and camera-related effects.
It's definitely an unusual addition, especially on a phone that is otherwise designed to be a relatively straightforward budget smartphone.
Whether you'll actually find the RGB lighting useful is another question, but it certainly gives the Redmi 17 something that separates it visually from many competing devices.
Ports, Buttons and Expandable Storage
Around the frame, the Redmi 17 has the volume controls and power button, with the fingerprint scanner integrated into the side-mounted power button.
At the bottom is the USB-C port and speaker grille.
There's also a hybrid SIM and microSD card slot, which is particularly useful if you're buying one of the lower-storage configurations.
Xiaomi says the phone supports microSD cards of up to 2TB, giving users plenty of room to expand the available storage.
And for anyone who still prefers wired headphones, Xiaomi has thankfully retained the 3.5mm headphone jack.
Redmi 17 Specifications
The Redmi 17 comes with a 6.9-inch HD+ display with a resolution of 1600 × 720 pixels.
The panel supports a refresh rate of up to 120Hz, which should make scrolling and compatible animations feel considerably smoother than a traditional 60Hz display.
The screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 7i, while Xiaomi has also included TÜV Rheinland certifications focused on eye comfort.
Underneath the phone is the MediaTek Helio G91-Ultra processor, paired with either 4GB or 6GB of RAM, depending on the configuration.
Storage goes up to 256GB, and the microSD slot allows for additional expansion.
For photography, the phone has a 50MP main rear camera and an 8MP front-facing camera.
These specifications position the Redmi 17 as more of an everyday smartphone rather than a device specifically designed around photography or high-end gaming.
The 7,500mAh Battery Is the Big Story
The most interesting specification on the Redmi 17 may be the battery.
Xiaomi has fitted the phone with a huge 7,500mAh battery, which is considerably larger than the 5,000mAh batteries that were once standard across much of the budget smartphone market.
The battery supports 45W Turbo Charging, so despite the enormous capacity, you aren't stuck with extremely slow charging.
There's also 22.5W wired reverse charging, allowing the Redmi 17 to act as a power source for other devices.
That could come in handy when you need to top up something like wireless earbuds, a smartwatch or even another smartphone.
Xiaomi claims the Redmi 17 can deliver up to two days of battery life, as well as up to 28 hours of video playback under its own testing conditions.
Of course, these are manufacturer figures. Real-world battery life will depend on things like screen brightness, refresh rate, mobile network usage, gaming and other daily activities.
That's something that needs to be tested properly rather than assumed from the battery capacity alone.
Don't Confuse the Redmi 17 4G With the 5G Model
There's an important detail to keep in mind when researching this phone online.
The device featured here is the Redmi 17 4G.
Xiaomi also has a Redmi 17 5G, but the two versions don't use identical hardware. The 5G version comes with a different chipset and other hardware differences.
The 5G model has already launched in select global markets, while the 4G version is the model coming to Nigeria for this launch.
So if you're comparing specifications online, make sure you're looking at the correct version. Some websites may list specifications for the 5G model when you're actually interested in the 4G version.
HyperOS 3 and the 120Hz Experience
Once powered on, the Redmi 17 runs HyperOS 3, Xiaomi's current Android-based software experience.
The interface should feel familiar to anyone who has used a recent Xiaomi or Redmi phone.
The 120Hz refresh rate also gives the interface a smoother feel when navigating menus and scrolling through apps.
Combined with the huge 6.9-inch display, the phone has the kind of screen size that should appeal to people who consume a lot of video content.
YouTube, Netflix, TikTok and other media-focused apps should benefit from the extra screen real estate.
However, this is still an initial look. A longer period of testing will be needed to determine how well the Helio G91-Ultra handles demanding apps and games.
What About the Cameras?
The Redmi 17 uses a 50MP main camera on the rear and an 8MP selfie camera.
The camera application itself is fairly straightforward, with familiar shooting modes such as portrait, night and video options.
However, a few initial camera samples aren't enough to properly judge smartphone photography.
A proper camera test should cover different lighting conditions, outdoor shots, indoor photography, portraits, video recording and comparisons with competing phones.
So while the 50MP specification sounds promising on paper, the actual image quality is something that needs further testing.
Other Features
The Redmi 17 also comes with dual stereo speakers, and Xiaomi says the phone can increase its volume by up to 300%.
Other features include Bluetooth 5.4, FM radio support, AI face unlock and a side-mounted fingerprint scanner.
The phone also has an IP64 rating for dust and splash resistance, which adds some protection against everyday exposure to dust and water splashes.
However, this doesn't mean the phone is designed to be submerged in water, so the IP rating shouldn't be interpreted as full waterproofing.
At around 232 grams, the Redmi 17 isn't exactly lightweight.
That's understandable when you consider the combination of a 6.9-inch display and 7,500mAh battery. Anyone looking for a compact smartphone will probably find this phone quite large.
First Impressions of the Redmi 17
After the initial unboxing and setup, there are already a few things that make the Redmi 17 interesting.
The 7,500mAh battery is obviously one of them, especially when combined with 45W charging and reverse charging.
The large 6.9-inch 120Hz display is another major feature, while the addition of RGB lighting gives the phone a distinctive personality.
The expandable storage and headphone jack are also welcome additions for users who still value those features.
But there are still some important questions that can only be answered after spending more time with the phone.
How capable is the Helio G91-Ultra in real-world use? How well does it handle games? What kind of camera results can you get from the 50MP sensor? And perhaps most importantly, how long can that 7,500mAh battery actually last with normal daily usage?
Those are the things that a full review will need to address.
