Redmi 17 Review: Is the Huge 7,500mAh Battery Worth the Downgrades?
The Redmi 17 comes with one of the biggest batteries you can find in this price range, along with a large 6.9-inch display, 45W charging, stereo speakers and even RGB lighting. But there is something interesting about this phone: compared with the Redmi 15, Xiaomi has made several changes that aren't necessarily upgrades.
So, while the 7,500mAh battery sounds impressive, the bigger question is whether the Redmi 17 is actually a better phone overall.
The Redmi 17 is positioned as an affordable smartphone for users who want a large screen, long battery life and enough performance for everyday tasks without spending too much.
It brings a 7,500mAh battery, 45W charging, a 6.9-inch 120Hz display, stereo speakers, Gorilla Glass 7i, IP64 protection and a 50MP main camera.
However, some of the specifications have actually gone backwards compared with the Redmi 15. The display resolution is lower, the refresh rate has dropped, the processor is less capable, and storage technology has also taken a step back.
That makes the Redmi 17 an interesting phone to review because its biggest upgrades aren't necessarily across the board.
Design and Build Quality
The Redmi 17 is a large smartphone. At over 17cm tall and around 232g, this isn't a compact device, and you'll definitely notice its size when using it one-handed.
The phone has a plastic construction, but it feels solid enough for its price. The front is protected by Gorilla Glass 7i, while the IP64 rating provides some protection against dust and water splashes.
The fingerprint scanner is mounted on the side and doubles as the power button. You also get a hybrid SIM tray, microSD card support and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Stereo speakers are another welcome addition, especially for watching videos and consuming other types of content.
There's also RGB lighting on the rear, which gives the phone a little more personality than you might expect from a budget device.
Display
The Redmi 17 has a 6.9-inch IPS LCD with a 120Hz refresh rate.
On paper, that sounds pretty decent for this price range, especially if you're looking for a large display. Scrolling through menus and supported apps feels smoother thanks to the higher refresh rate.
However, this is also one of the biggest areas where the Redmi 17 falls behind the Redmi 15.
The Redmi 15 has a 6.9-inch Full HD+ display with a 144Hz refresh rate and a resolution of 2340 × 1080. The Redmi 17 drops to 1600 × 720 and 120Hz.
The Gorilla Glass 7i protection is an improvement in terms of durability, but the lower resolution means the screen isn't as sharp as the one on its predecessor.
For normal social media, YouTube and everyday use, the display is usable. But if you care about sharp text, movies or detailed images, this downgrade is noticeable.
Performance
The Redmi 17 is powered by the MediaTek Helio G91-Ultra, and my test unit came with 4GB of RAM.
For basic tasks such as WhatsApp, browsing, social media and watching videos, the phone can handle things reasonably well. But once you start opening several apps or doing heavier tasks, the limitations become easier to notice.
The Redmi 15 uses the Snapdragon 685, which is built on a more efficient 6nm process, while the Helio G91-Ultra is based on a 12nm process.
The Redmi 15 also offers up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage using UFS 2.2, while the Redmi 17 tops out at 6GB of RAM and uses eMMC 5.1 storage.
That difference matters because storage technology can affect things such as app loading and general responsiveness.
Gaming is another area where I wouldn't recommend buying the Redmi 17 specifically for performance. It can handle lighter games, but this isn't a gaming-focused phone.
At around this price, phones such as the Infinix Hot 60 Pro offer more performance and a sharper display, making the Redmi 17's value proposition more complicated.
Software and Features
The Redmi 17 runs Android 16 with HyperOS 3.
The newer software brings features such as HyperIsland and the usual HyperOS customisations.
However, the 4GB RAM model can feel restrictive, especially if you regularly multitask. If you're choosing between the available configurations, I'd recommend going for the 6GB version.
The software experience itself is familiar if you've used recent Xiaomi and Redmi phones, although some features you'd expect on more capable models may be missing.
Camera
The Redmi 17 comes with a 50MP main camera on the rear and an 8MP selfie camera.
In good lighting, the main camera can produce decent-looking photos with enough detail for social media and everyday use.
Once lighting conditions become difficult, however, the limitations become more obvious. Low-light images are only average, and this isn't a phone I'd recommend primarily because of its cameras.
Video recording is also limited to 1080p at 30fps on both the front and rear cameras.
For casual photography, the cameras are fine. But if photography is high on your priority list, there are stronger options around this price.
Battery Life
This is where the Redmi 17 really stands out.
The phone packs a massive 7,500mAh battery, which is larger than what you normally find in this price category.
With normal everyday use, the phone can comfortably last an entire day and, depending on how you use it, potentially much longer. Lighter users should be able to get close to two days from a single charge.
Charging is also faster than on the Redmi 15, with support for 45W charging compared with 33W on the older model.
From completely empty to full, charging takes roughly 2 hours and 5 minutes.
The Redmi 17 also supports 22.5W reverse wired charging, meaning you can use it to charge another compatible device.
So in a way, the phone can double as a large power bank when you need it.
If battery endurance is your biggest priority, this is easily one of the Redmi 17's strongest selling points.
Pricing and Availability
In Nigeria, the Redmi 17 is available in several configurations:
- 4GB RAM + 128GB storage — ₦210,500
- 6GB RAM + 128GB storage — ₦267,000
- 6GB RAM + 256GB storage — ₦295,000
The pricing makes the 4GB version considerably more interesting because it sits close to the Redmi 15's price range.
The higher configurations are more difficult to recommend because you're getting closer to phones that offer better displays, stronger processors, more RAM or AMOLED panels.
Redmi 17 vs Redmi 15
This is probably the most important comparison to make.
The Redmi 17 gives you a larger 7,500mAh battery, faster 45W charging, newer Android software, Gorilla Glass 7i and RGB lighting.
But the Redmi 15 gives you a Full HD+ 144Hz display, up to 8GB of RAM, 256GB storage and UFS 2.2 storage, alongside the Snapdragon 685.
The Redmi 15 also costs roughly ₦213,000–₦238,000 for some 8GB/256GB configurations.
So the Redmi 17 isn't a straightforward upgrade. In some areas, you're actually giving up features to get the larger battery and newer software.

Final Verdict
The Redmi 17 isn't a bad smartphone, but it's a phone with a very specific selling point.
That 7,500mAh battery is the main reason to consider it. If you want a large phone that can last for a very long time, supports 45W charging and can even reverse-charge another device, the Redmi 17 makes sense.
But if you're more interested in display quality, gaming performance, multitasking or overall hardware value, there are other options worth considering.
And if you already own the Redmi 15, upgrading to the Redmi 17 doesn't make much sense unless the larger battery is particularly important to you.
At around ₦210,500, the 4GB/128GB model is the easiest version to understand. At ₦267,000 and ₦295,000, the competition becomes much tougher.
Ultimately, the Redmi 17 is less about giving you the best specifications in every category and more about giving you a huge battery in an affordable package.
