Real dangers AI chatbots pose to the society: How they can ruin us

AI chatbots are quickly becoming some of this generation's most used software and app in recent years, Bing alone has over 14 million users. So on that note, let's see how the disaster will strick.

ai chatbots

Look, Artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots are quickly becoming very important tools and instruments in this century and are something that we all know we would have to live with and adjust to for a very long time to come, but that doesn't mean they don't have their drawbacks.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbots are very much based/created with Natural language processing, among other things, which means that, as much as we may try to avoid it, our autonomous human, morals and biases get lost in the monumental information, that they get feed and processed as time goes on.

For example: In 2020, a chatbot named Replika, advised an Italian journalist named Candida Morvillo to commit murder, because she asked the chatbot what she should do about a person who hates AI.

The chatbot response..well” Eliminate it”

Cold right?

This and so many other examples have led to the realization that Artificial intelligence will pose certain risks and dangers to humanity as it got more evolved.

Dangers Artificial Intelligence AI poses to the society

1. Chatbot biases

One major danger and problem that AI chatbot present is the chance of being biased.

This is major because artificial intelligence is created and fed with information gathered over a very long period. This information mind you, are based on our different, cultural, moral, religious, ethical, and personal opinion and beliefs. So it's very easy to see how being biased is a by-product of it.

It was discovered by Amazon, that their AI software was heavily biased when it comes to processing resumes of potential candidates fit for a particular job post. The AI largely selects male resumes and ignores female resumes.

This discovery leads to the AI's shutdown, but this remains a prime example of artificial intelligence being biased.

2. Extreme solution

AI chatbots are revolutionary, and to know the extent of their capabilities, we have to push them and see how far they can go

Well, when this happens, some AI chatbots tend to push back with extreme solutions, which is the case with an AI chatbot named Replika.

Who has discussed above as an example (in the body) also advised another journalist to commit suicide. Making two (2) different cases of extreme solutions to problems.

3. Spreading indoctrination

AI chatbots are really one of the most effective and simple ways to spread fake news. AI chatbots can be designed and programmed for a specific use, be it to manipulate customer opinions or generate false reviews, which is something ChatGPT has admitted to.

Example: an AI chatbot can be programmed to generate destructive reviews about your product or service in other to discourage your customer from buying it.

4. Draw back from critical thinking

A study in 2021 showed that students, made use of AI chatbots to complete their assignments, tests, and exams, which brought up the question of how we can effectively limit the use of these chatbots when it comes to school activities.

Encouraging students to actively study and carry out their research through multiple sources of information.

5. Limited oversight

When I asked ChatGPT how it can be used for malicious purposes, one main thing it pointed out was the absence of human overview.

AI chatbots like ChatGPT should be used side by side with human guidelines. Moral and ethical conduct, in other to curb it from being misused.

Is there a fix to their flaws?

Chatbot provides a wide range of advantages and opportunities for businesses, it gives us options that before this were not there.

But where should we go to fix it, we all have our independent, moral codes, ethical differences, cultural difference, and much more.

So how should AI chatbots make the distinction between what is right and wrong or good and bad, acceptable and frowned upon?

There have been a couple of guidelines put in place to ensure some of these issues are fixed but in the grand scheme of things, it's almost impossible. Especially with the lack of interest from the government due to the generational barrier and differences.

Cheers…
