itel Buds 5 Review: Premium ANC Earbuds on a Budget?

itel buds 5 thumb

There’s a point where budget earbuds stop sounding “cheap” and start making you question why people still spend so much money on audio gear. That’s exactly the feeling I had after using the itel Buds 5 for a while. And no, don’t confuse these with the Buds Air 5 — this is a completely different product with a different approach.

The biggest headline feature here is Active Noise Cancellation, something we normally don’t expect to see done properly at this price point. Yet somehow, itel decided to throw ANC, Bluetooth 6.0, app support, AI translation, 32 hours of battery life, and large 13mm drivers into earbuds that cost around ₦23,850.

That immediately raises one question: is this actually good, or is it just another spec-sheet trick?

After spending time with the Buds 5, the answer is surprisingly interesting.

Unboxing Experience

Inside the box, itel keeps things simple but practical. You get the earbuds, the charging case, a USB-C cable, extra silicone ear tips, a warranty card, and the user manual.

The extra ear tips matter more than people think. If you use the wrong size, the earbuds won’t seal properly in your ears, which affects bass response and ANC performance. Swapping to the right fit completely changes the experience. The bass becomes fuller, outside noise reduces better, and the earbuds feel more secure during movement.

Design & Build Quality

The first thing that caught my attention was the design. Honestly, if you handed these to someone without mentioning the price, most people would never guess they cost under ₦25,000.

The charging case has a rounded pebble-like shape that feels smooth in the hand and slides easily into your pocket. The glossy reflector finish on the lid gives it a premium look, especially in the Warm Sand color variant. And yes, Warm Sand genuinely looks beautiful in person. It has this soft matte aesthetic that stands out from the usual black-and-white earbuds flooding the market.

But there’s one issue: scratches.

The glossy finish picks up scratches very easily, so after a few weeks of careless use, the case probably won’t stay looking brand new. That’s the trade-off for the premium aesthetic.

The earbuds themselves use a stem-style design with glossy accents. They sit comfortably in the ear, feel lightweight, and don’t create that painful ear fatigue some cheap earbuds cause after long listening sessions.

Sound Quality

The itel Buds 5 are unapologetically bass-heavy.

Inside, you’re getting large 13mm dynamic drivers — even bigger than the drivers inside products like the QCY Melobuds N50. Bigger drivers usually allow more air movement, which translates into deeper and more powerful bass.

And trust me, you hear it immediately.

If your playlist is filled with Afrobeats, Amapiano, drill, hip-hop, or electronic music, these earbuds feel made for you. The bass hits hard and delivers that satisfying punch budget earbuds often struggle to achieve.

But here’s the honest truth: itel probably pushed the bass too far.

Sometimes the low frequencies overpower vocals and instrument separation, especially on songs that are already bass-heavy. Vocals can sound slightly buried behind the thumping bass response.

That said, for many buyers in this price range, that aggressive bass tuning is actually a positive. A lot of people simply want powerful, exciting sound, and the Buds 5 definitely deliver that.

ANC Performance Surprisingly Exists

This is where things become impressive for the money.

The Buds 5 come with 32dB Active Noise Cancellation, which immediately sounds unrealistic at this price. Budget earbuds usually advertise ANC that barely works, but the Buds 5 actually reduce background noise noticeably.

Now let’s be realistic here — this is not flagship-level ANC.

You’re not getting the kind of total silence you’d find on expensive Sony or Apple earbuds. But for generators, fan noise, traffic hum, and noisy environments, it genuinely helps.

The key is getting the right ear tip seal. Without proper fit, ANC performance drops heavily.

Transparency mode also works surprisingly well. Voices come through naturally enough for conversations without removing the earbuds. The only downside is a faint background hiss caused by the microphones amplifying surrounding sound.

The itel Sound App Experience

itel buds 5 app

Unlike the BudsGo, these actually support the itel Sound app.

And honestly, the app adds a lot to the experience.

Inside the app, you can:

  • Monitor battery percentage for both earbuds and the case
  • Switch between EQ presets
  • Enable game mode
  • Customize touch controls
  • Access AI translation features

The EQ presets include Bass Boost, Treble Boost, Vocal Boost, and Transsion Spatial Sound.

Bass Boost pushes the low-end even further for bass lovers, while Treble Boost helps balance vocals slightly better.

But I need to be honest about two things.

First, the custom EQ feature doesn’t work properly. It feels unfinished.

Second, the so-called Spatial Sound mode honestly feels pointless. It doesn’t improve immersion in any meaningful way and ends up sounding artificial.

Gaming & Bluetooth Performance

The Buds 5 use Bluetooth 6.0, and connection stability is excellent.

Pairing happens quickly, and once connected, the earbuds maintain a strong signal even across rooms. I could leave my phone in one area and move around the house without constant disconnections.

Game mode exists to reduce audio latency during gaming sessions. In games like PUBG Mobile, it helps, but it’s inconsistent. Sometimes the delay becomes noticeable again during intense moments.

For casual gaming and video watching though, synchronization is good enough.

AI Real-Time Translation

This is one of the weirdest features to find in budget earbuds.

The Buds 5 support AI-powered real-time translation through the app. You can translate conversations directly through the earbuds, including support for some indigenous languages.

Now, it’s definitely not perfect yet. Popular international languages work better and more consistently than local dialects. But considering the price, it’s genuinely impressive that this feature even exists here at all.

It feels more like a glimpse into where budget audio products are heading in the future.

Call Quality & Microphones

Call quality is another strong point.

The earbuds use a 4-microphone ENC setup designed to isolate your voice from background noise. In real-world use, this works surprisingly well for phone calls outdoors.

Even in noisy Nigerian environments with generators, traffic, and roadside noise, voices remain relatively clear to the person on the other end.

For work calls, voice chats, and regular conversations, the Buds 5 perform above expectations for the price.

Touch Controls & Everyday Use

The touch controls feel responsive without becoming overly sensitive.

You can:

  • Double-tap to play/pause music
  • Answer or end calls
  • Skip tracks
  • Toggle ANC modes
  • Customize gestures through the app

One thing I appreciated is that adjusting the earbuds rarely triggers accidental touches, which is something many budget earbuds still struggle with.

Battery Life

Battery life is another area where the Buds 5 perform well.

You get:

  • Around 5 hours from the earbuds alone
  • Up to 32 hours total with the charging case

For normal daily usage, that means charging once every several days instead of constantly carrying a power bank around.

The case charges through USB-C, which is expected and convenient in 2026.

Water Resistance

The IPX5 rating means sweat and light rain aren’t a problem.

You can comfortably use these at the gym, during workouts, or while walking outside without panicking over small water exposure.

Just don’t drop them inside water completely.

Final Verdict

itel buds 5 nb

The itel Buds 5 are not perfect earbuds.

The sound tuning prioritizes bass too aggressively at times. The spatial audio mode feels unnecessary. The custom EQ needs fixing. And the charging case scratches too easily.

But once you look at the actual price, the value becomes hard to ignore.

For around ₦23,850, you’re getting:

  • Real ANC
  • Strong bass performance
  • Good microphone quality
  • Bluetooth 6.0
  • App support
  • Long battery life
  • AI translation
  • Premium-looking design

That combination simply doesn’t exist often at this price point.

If you want balanced audiophile sound, these may not be for you. But if you want affordable earbuds packed with features, powerful bass, and genuinely useful everyday performance, the itel Buds 5 are easy to recommend.
